Overseers’ reunion

6th October 2016

The latest meeting of Southport RAM Lodge No 473 saw Malcolm Serjeant elevated into the order.

In 2015-16 Malcolm had served as Provincial Grand Senior Overseer in the Mark degree and had become good friends with his fellow overseers Austin Fletcher and Keiron Mullan who are both RAM members. On the evening Austin had to tender his apologies as other commitments prevented him being present, but Keiron made his way down to Southport from Barrow in Furness to support Malcolm.

Southport Lodge Commander Terry Tasker, who had been Provincial Senior Grand Deacon during the same period, was gracious enough to let Keiron take part in the ceremony.

After Terry had conducted the initial part of the ceremony Keiron was invited to explain the signs of the degree which he did in exemplary fashion. Similarly John Dixon gave a delightful presentation of the working tools when he was called into action.

Since the last meeting of the lodge chaplain John Mawdsley had been promoted to RAM Provincial Grand Rank and due honour was paid to him.

In contrast Neil Latham received his Grand Mark certificate as he continued his first steps in the order.

Also present to witness proceedings were two visiting Commanders in the persons of Martin Wootton of Progress Lodge No 898 in Preston and Dave Sear of Furness Mark Lodge No 375 who as a steward had also been part of the 2015-16 team.

Afterwards Dave observed, “Not only was it a great pleasure to see Malcolm elevated in such fine style but the warmth of the welcome extended to the visitors exemplified all that is good about the degree.”

At the festive board following the meeting it was revealed that it was in fact John Mawdsley’s birthday and he was suitably serenaded with a chorus of “Happy Birthday to You.”
